Packing for Dorm Life and Moving to College in One Trip

It’s college season. According to the Colorado Department of Higher Education, just over 31,000 freshman will be off to college dorms all around Colorado by the end of August. Since packing for college can be such a daunting task, we have put together a list of necessary survival items to take with you, all in a single trip.

What to Bring

Packing for college dorm life can be overwhelming. You never know what everyone else is going to bring. However, you should understand that the space is extremely limited in a dorm. In order to get the most out of your cramped crib, we recommend bringing the following essentials:

·      Clothing: You definitely don’t want to overpack those clothes you always think you’ll wear but haven’t worn for the past four years. If you haven’t worn it in the last six months, leave it at home. Another good piece of advice here: pack for a Colorado fall, meaning bring stuff you can wear when it’s still fairly warm out, several pairs of jeans, a couple of sweaters, and some layering items. If you’re making a trip home for Thanksgiving, you can replace some of your summer outfits with warmer sweater-weather looks.

·      Toiletries: Since most dorms have communal restrooms and showers, you will want to bring a shower caddy and shower shoes. It’s not recommended to use the showers without some type of foot protection, simply because so many people are utilizing those facilities. A shower caddy is a convenient way to carry your shampoo, conditioner, body wash, razers, etc. Additional toiletries to consider include plenty of towels and washcloths, dry shampoo, baby wipes, and cotton swabs.

·      Storage: Space bags, under-the-bed storage, and removable or over-the-door hanging equipment will save you a lot of stress. Dorm rooms have a reputation for having very little storage, so making the most of your tiny closet and utilizing the space under your bed are both so important. Again, do your best not to overpack. You can always exchange wardrobes during holiday vacations, but finding extra storage space will prove to be difficult for overflow items.

·      Sentimental Items: Most people move away from home for the first time when they leave for college and really miss home. Make sure to pack a couple of small sentimental items that won’t take up a lot of space. Pro tip: bring printed photos and sticky tack to create a photo collage.

·      Other Essentials: Don’t forget other essentials such as a laundry basket, detergent, and one set of dishware (fork, knife, plate, spoon, bowl, cup, coffee mug). Don’t forget to ask the person in charge of your dorm what will be provided by campus and what you should plan on bringing. This is extremely helpful in avoiding overpacking any space-taking electronics or bulky items.
