August is here, and our 17th annual ‘Stuff for Students’ school supply drive is in full effect. This year, Larry H. Miller Dodge RAM Havana is partnering again with other Larry H. Miller dealerships in the Colorado area, Denver’s 9NEWS, and the Volunteers of America (VOA) Colorado Branch to donate school supplies to more than 15 local school districts. We will be collecting donations all month long and then distributing the supplies to students in need.
The goal of the ‘Stuff for Students’ campaign has always been to provide supplies to those who cannot afford it. Last year was our most successful supply drive since we began over 17 years ago. In 2017, you helped us collect and distribute over $23,500 in supplies and monetary donations to more than 60,000 students all across the state. We are aiming to help the community even more this year, but we need your help.
“One of the greatest investments we can make as a company is in our youth,” said Ray Reilly, senior vice president of operations, Larry H. Miller Dealerships. “By participating in ‘Stuff for Students,’ we’ve been able to ensure that local students have the tools they need to succeed in school. Our incredible customers and employees have helped us collect nearly $50,000 in school supplies over the last four years, and we look forward to a successful 2018.”
Unfortunately, Colorado teachers on average spend approximately $656 every year to provide students with classroom supplies, according to the Colorado Education Association. The number of students living in poverty within counties serviced by the VOA is 23 percent—nearly 10 percent more than the statewide average. With almost 25,000 students unable to afford basic school supplies, your donations are needed now more than ever.
“The teacher walkouts seen around the country this year highlight how dramatically underfunded public schools can be. A lack of resources means children living in poverty could fall behind in class,” said Bradley Gulley, director of volunteer services, Volunteers of America Colorado. “The donated school supplies from Larry H. Miller dealerships and their customers make a real difference in helping children be successful in the classroom.”
